To find galleries that might suit your work, visit as many as possible and familiarise yourself with the type of art they exhibit and sell.

Finding a Commercial Gallery or Agent

When you have targeted a short list of galleries, phone for an appointment to present your work, but be aware that many established galleries have commitments to artists they already represent and cannot take on new artists. However, the gallery may be interested in meeting with you for future consideration, or a new gallery may be looking for artists to fill their exhibition program.

A small percentage of artists sell their work through agents. Some agents are employed by large clients like hotel chains, or private collectors to source and buy artwork, while other agents are employed by artists to find buyers or commissions. Some agents specialise in exporting work overseas. When dealing with agents, be sure whose interests they are representing. To find an agent, talk to other artists, auction houses and gallery dealers.
