What is an Emerging Artist?

There are times when opportunities for artists will be limited to ‘emerging’ artists. There is no standard definition of what this means, but some of the criteria currently in use are as follows.

Freedman Foundation Travelling Scholarship for Emerging Artists – “You must be an emerging artist ie you have probably practised as a professional artist continually for less than 5 years but wish to develop your career in your chosen artform” This grant also has an age requirement of 30 years and under.

Australia Council Young and Emerging Artists Initiative Grants – are open to artists under 30 years of age.

Ripe: ANZ Private Bank and Art & Australia Emerging Artists Scheme – definition used for this scheme is “practising professionally for no more than five years, and who have had their work publicly exhibited.”
