Art Business Basics

NAVA has developed a series of business skills training templates that can be accessed for free by NAVA organisational members. The templates will assist member organisations to develop training sessions for the professional artists they work with or wish to assist.

Art Business Basics covers the following topics:

Sole trader issues:This session covers agencies to help you set up as a sole trader; the difference between a commercial and not for profit business; use of trading name; being in business; insurance; business records; art/craft practice records; planning your estate

Taxation:This session covers the tax choices you have to make; registering for an ABN; registering for GST; tax averaging; tax invoices; PAYG; statement by a supplier; business activity statements; non-commercial losses provisions.

Public galleries – how they work with artists:This session covers national and state gallery exhibition statistics; regional gallery curating and exhibition programs; CAOS statistics; the Australian Craft Design Organisations network; NETS agencies.

The commercial artist/ gallery relationship:This session covers the value of a good relationship; statistics on Australian commercial galleries; common gallery terms; types of sales relationships a gallery may offer.

Negotiating:This session covers understanding the offer; understanding your strengths and what you can provide; tips for negotiating adequate payment; best practice relationships.

Awards and Prizes – as a market opportunity for artists:This session covers awards and prizes and their importance as a market place; awards and prizes entry checklist; case studies of terms and conditions and their implications.

Funding – a checklist for making better applications: This session covers statistics on grant success rates; the 4 major parts in optimising a funding proposal; the 3 major components of a grant application; philanthropy.

E-commerce and e-marketing - Marketing is the process by which you come to understand the relationship between your product and your customer. E-marketing is about using the internet to gain that understanding and connect to your customers. This workshops looks at some marketing concepts such as the 6 P’s of marketing and building a brand and relates them to the 7C’s of e-marketing.

Art Business Basics also includes a workshop evaluation sheet, suggested notes for participants and suggested additional documents that can be provided to participants on a CD Rom.
