Government to implement ALRC's Sedition Report

On 23 December 08 the federal government announced that it would support the recommendations in the Australian Law Reform Commission report Fighting Words: A Review of Sedition Laws in Australia (ALRC 104, 2006).

The ALRC made 27 recommendations for reform of the law in this area, and the Government accepted 25 of these unconditionally and two of them ‘in principle’.

Resale Royalty Draft Bill Not Supported

The Australian Copyright Council has prepared a briefing document that outlines key issues regarding the Resale Royalty Right for Visual Artists Bill 2008. The paper includes information on why a coalition of organizations, including NAVA, does not support the current draft of the Bill. This group will be making a submission to the House of Representatives Committee inquiry.

Draft Australian Indigenous Art Commercial Code of Conduct Released

The Australia Council for the Arts and Department for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts have released the draft of the Australian Indigenous Art Commercial Code of Conduct for public comment today.

Internet Censorship

NAVA has joined with GetUp to oppose the government’s proposed internet filter scheme, which essentially will be an internet censorship system that will be more restrictive than what is applied in any other democracy.

Education Revolution? The Arts Have It!

Unless the arts are included as a key learning area in the development of a national curriculum for schools, children coming through the system will be illiterate in the new skill areas essential for the C21st.So says a new lobby coalition, the National Advocates for Arts Education (NAAE) which has just spent two days meeting with politicians and arts advisers in Canberra.

Compromised Resale Royalty Legislation

The whole arts sector is expressing its extreme disappointment with compromised Resale Royalty legislation which was introduced into the House of Representatives on Thursday November 27th by Arts Minister Peter Garrett. There have been intense complaints about the model and it has been referred for inquiry and report to the Standing Committee on Climate Change, Water, Environment and the Arts.

NSW Government to Censor Artists

The outfall from the Bill Henson case continues to escalate. The NSW Attorney General John Hatzistergos has taken on the role of moral crusader and is trying to convince his fellow state Attorneys General to follow suit at the meeting of their Standing Committee in Brisbane early in November.
